LED Spot Light - What Are Beam Angles?

One of the things you often hear about LED Spot Light is that their beam angle is narrower than old-not only incandescent bulbs, or even newer CFLs.

What does this mean and is it a problem?

The angle of the beam is the angle at which the light is directed by the bulb. Thus, a small angle of 20 degrees would be suitable for a spot, focusing the light on a single small area. If you want more general lighting, spreading the light over an entire room, a wider angle, perhaps 90 degrees, would be preferable. In most home LED Spot Light situations, beam angles of 30 to 45 degrees are enough to illuminate a room comfortably.

The idea that LEDs have narrow beam angles stems from older technology, as LEDs have been designed for focused light in a narrow area. Today, that is no longer true. The new technology now means that LED Spot Lights are available in a wide range of beam angles, ranging from narrow spots to wider general lighting.

Some LEDs can be purchased in a range of beam angles ranging from 15, 30, 40, 45, 60, 90 and 120 degrees. This means that there are many choices on the market, sometimes so much that it creates confusion for the buyer. You can no longer just catch a light bulb on supermarket shelves. There are decisions to be made!

When choosing LED Spot Light for your home, the important thing is to determine exactly what is needed for each area. A room lit by a single ceiling light will certainly require the widest beam angle available, while a room with several downlights placed in different areas of the room can use the average beam angle of 35 to 40, as the Lights will cover different areas overlapping each other.

You'll need a different type of LED Spot Light for a table lamp than for ceiling light, otherwise, you risk throwing light directly to the ceiling instead of illuminating your desk or reading material!

When you're just starting out with LED Spot Light, it's a good idea to hire a specialist in the field who understands all the options and can advise you on the lighting solutions that are best suited to your needs. LEDs represent a significant investment at the time of the initial purchase, although they gain several times in terms of long life and energy savings.

So you want to start with the good ones. Look for a lighting specialist in your area who offers a wide range of quality LED Spot Light. They should be happy to spend time advising you on your needs.
